About James A. Truett

I've spent much of my life learning to look a little closer.

I grew up in a small village outside Fairbanks, Alaska, surrounded by extraordinary wilderness. Nature fascinated me then, and it still does.

I've travelled much of the world, worked as a journalist with The Associated Press, flown airplanes and sailed oceans.

But wherever life has taken me, I've always found myself drawn back to the beauty of the natural world.

These days, from my home in County Clare, Ireland, I explore that fascination through my art.

A different way of seeing

My years in journalism taught me something important. We spent so much time reporting what was wrong with the world that we often overlooked everything wonderful happening around us.

I eventually realised I wanted to tell a different kind of story.

My painterly impressionist photography grew from that desire. I'm fascinated by nature's colours, textures and patterns, and the fleeting moments of light that can transform an ordinary landscape.

I use photography as the starting point, then interpret each image to express what I felt when I was there.

"I don't want to show you exactly what I saw. I want to share something of what I felt when I was there."

When art becomes personal

One of the things I love most about creating art is discovering how differently people respond to it.

Someone might see a peaceful landscape. Someone else remembers a place from childhood, a loved one or a moment they'd almost forgotten.

I think art becomes something special when it connects with your own experiences and emotions.

That's what I hope happens when you encounter my work.

"The image begins with me, but what you feel when you see it belongs entirely to you."

See Beauty Everywhere

Those three words have become my philosophy, shaped by a lifetime of wonderful experiences and some difficult ones.

They remind me that beauty exists even when life isn't particularly beautiful.

These days, I think increasingly about what I'll leave behind. My hope is that my art encourages people to notice and appreciate the natural world, and perhaps find a little more peace and happiness in their everyday lives.

I'd like to leave the world a little better, a little kinder and a little more beautiful than I found it.

And if one of my artworks brings some of that beauty into your life, I couldn't ask for much more.
