The Story Behind My Book, The Kindness & Gratitude Effect
When people discover my work for the first time, they often ask how I find the places and moments I photograph.
The answer has very little to do with photography.
Over the years, I’ve come to realise that what I’m really doing isn’t taking pictures. I’m paying attention.
Some of my favourite images have come from places most people would drive past without a second thought. A patch of wildflowers along a quiet country road. Morning mist drifting across an Irish lake. Sunlight breaks through storm clouds for just a few seconds. They’re ordinary moments, yet they remind me that beauty is never as far away as we sometimes think.

That way of seeing didn’t happen overnight.
Like everyone else, I’ve had seasons of uncertainty, disappointment, loss, and self-doubt. Life has a way of reminding us that things don’t always unfold according to plan. During those times, it’s easy to become so focused on what’s wrong that we stop noticing what’s still right.
For me, spending time in nature became a quiet teacher.
Walking the back roads of County Clare with my camera slowed my mind. It reminded me that beauty still existed, even on difficult days. Gradually, I realised that what I was learning wasn’t really about photography at all. It was about perspective. It was about choosing where to place my attention.
That simple realisation eventually became the philosophy behind my artwork and the words that now guide much of my life:
See Beauty Everywhere.
Those three words don’t suggest that life is always beautiful. It isn’t. They simply remind me that beauty, kindness, hope, and gratitude continue to exist, even when life feels complicated. We often miss them because we’re distracted by worry, fear, or the relentless pace of modern life.
That philosophy has shaped my artwork for many years, but eventually I felt there was more to say than a photograph alone could express.
That’s why I wrote The Kindness & Gratitude Effect.
This isn’t a photography book, and it isn’t a traditional self-help book. It’s a collection of stories, reflections, and ideas that explore the mindset behind my work and the lessons I’ve learned while searching for beauty in everyday life. I write honestly about kindness, gratitude, resilience, slowing down, and learning to see the world a little differently.
I don’t offer easy answers or claim to have life figured out. I’m simply sharing what has helped me through my own ups and downs, in the hope that some of those ideas might resonate with you as well.
If you’ve enjoyed my artwork over the years, I think you’ll discover where many of those images truly begin. Long before I lift the camera, there’s a decision to slow down, notice more, and appreciate what might otherwise go unseen.
Perhaps that’s the real message behind everything I create.
Whether it’s a photograph hanging on a wall or words printed on a page, my hope is always the same: that you’ll pause for a moment, take a fresh look at the world around you, and discover that there is far more beauty, kindness, and hope than we often realise.
The Kindness & Gratitude Effect is available on Amazon.com in ebook, audiobook, paperback, and hardcover editions.
Thank you for allowing me to share this journey with you. I hope both my art and my writing encourage you, in their own quiet way, to slow down… look a little closer… and, perhaps, to see beauty everywhere.
